RAJESH TANDON

FOUNDER-PRESIDENT, PRIA (PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH IN ASIA)

FOUNDER-PRESIDENT, PRIA (PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH IN ASIA)

Dr. Rajesh Tandon is the founding President of Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), a global participatory research and training center based in New Delhi since 1982. In 2012, he was appointed Co-Chair of the UNESCO Chair in Community Research and Responsibility. in higher education. Originally from Kanpur, a small town in northern India, Dr. Tandon graduated from elite institutions in India with a degree in electronics engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). ) from Kanpur, he holds an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Calcutta, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Science from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, USA.

It was the advice of his mother and grandmother, both strong and avant-garde for their time, that undeniably pushed Rajesh to become a leader in gender-sensitive change. From her mother, who was the first student in Kanpur, he learned how to reconcile and balance the worlds of work and home. His late wife, Dr. Martha Farrell, was a “day-to-day feminist”, through which she learned practical approaches to integrating gender into organizational leadership and social change programs.

Dr. Tandon encouraged the practice of participatory research (a methodology that values the experiential knowledge and wisdom of practitioners in addition to the more formal knowledge available in universities and journals) to find solutions to development challenges. For him, research can not be neutral – it must be used for change. For 45 years, he has championed participatory research in India, South Asia and the South, making PRIA a way to strengthen grassroots learning opportunities and knowledge for greater social influence. Today, community knowledge and organization for social transformation, as well as learning and participation as tools for empowerment and development, are terms commonly used by grassroots groups, practitioners, universities, governments, donors and philanthropic organizations.

Mr. Tandon is an Adjunct Professor at Royal Roads University in Victoria, Canada, and Adjunct Professor at the School of Public Administration, University of Victoria, Canada. He was Chair of the External Advisory Committee of the Community Research Bureau of the University of Victoria (Canada) in 2006, Vice President of the International Council for Adult Education in Canada from 1986 to 1994 and President of the FIM Forum for Democratic Global Governance, a think tank in Montreal, between 1998 and 2012.
